The Cardinal József Mindszenty Memorial marks the first Hungarian-related public memorial established in Auckland, New Zealand.

Cardinal József Mindszenty (1892–1975), Archbishop of Esztergom and Primate of Hungary, was one of the most influential figures in twentieth-century Hungarian history. Throughout the communist era, he remained steadfast in his faith, his commitment to truth, and his dedication to Hungary's independence. Imprisoned, persecuted, and ultimately forced into exile, he became an enduring symbol of courage, resilience, and moral integrity.

In December 1974, during his pastoral journey through the Southern Hemisphere, Cardinal Mindszenty visited New Zealand and celebrated Holy Mass with the Hungarian Catholic community in Auckland. The visit formed part of his mission to strengthen Hungarian communities abroad in both their faith and cultural identity. It was one of his final major international journeys before his passing in 1975.

This memorial was created to honour his legacy and to commemorate the lasting connection between Cardinal Mindszenty, the Hungarian community, and New Zealand.
